I really enjoyed this article and appreciate Marcel LaFlamme's look into an often ignored population of users. I recently left a position as Youth Services Librarian in a small (pop. 2,500) Iowa town's public library. This town is highly conservative and has an impressive percentage of Amish and Mennonite residents. I found myself frustrated by the lack of discussion of Christian teens in both state and national conferences and workshops. In our library the most popular young adult materials were Christian fiction and what LaFlamme calls "prophecy fiction". I found very few resources available to help me develop this collection -- in fact, I found much more information on developing GLBTQ YA collections than Christian fiction collections. I wonder if any studies have been done to see what areas that were once considered under-served could now be considered over-served (by census or other similar data). I would wager that some libraries' young adult GLBTQ collections are over-representing a minority population. I personally would like to see more resources available that represent America as it actually is and not as our profession would like to see it.
Sincerely,
