Providing Access and Improving National Cooperation:Contemporary Libraries and Librarianship in Switzerland
Libraries and librarians in Switzerland benefit from a long a history of professional organization, a strong economy, and a commitment to improving access to information while facing unique challenges as a small country with a multilingual population and internal divisions that inhibit collaboration. After giving an overview of libraries and librarianship in contemporary Switzerland, this paper discusses the issues facing Swiss Librarianship and the trend towards increased collaborative efforts between Swiss libraries and better electronic collections. Although librarians in Switzerland are motivated to create stronger nationwide partnerships and better electronic library collections, they will continue to struggle with financial limitations and internal cultural and linguistic divisions.
