Male Librarians:Gender Issues & Stereotypes

Paul Goodson

Abstract

Male librarians have been around since the earliest days of libraries, yet in the 20th century the profession came to be considered as a women's field (similar to nursing or social work). As a result many in society have a stereotypical view of male librarians and why they choose the field. Women came to be dominate in the profession and continue to enjoy a large majority to this day.

The studies that have been conducted on male librarians reveal quite a different picture that is contrary to the expected stereotypes. Male librarians overwhelming choose the profession because they love being librarians.

There are gender issues that both male and female librarians must deal with. These issues are also discussed herein.
