…perhaps it’s time to announce a new LSJ blog policy: radio silence in the weeks leading up to finals. Or, more accurately, to final papers. Think of it as my own small contribution to reducing your options for procrastination.
But seriously, we’ll be back with a normal slate of thoughts and news and interviews when the spring craze dies down, which for me will be in exactly 8 days.
In the meantime, I’m thinking about all the people I’ll be saying goodbye to as they move out into the professional world (for more on that, check out the #libschoolDONE thread on Twitter) and I remain in school and move from a master’s to a doctoral program. There seems to be something of a disconnect between master’s and PhD students, both at U of I and across LIS, partly because of the vastly different time frames involved in getting the degrees (how frustrating to make friends who complete the program in a year and leave you to start fresh again for your remaining three), and partly because of the vastly different aims of each program. One is devoted to practice, the other to research, and though the two are deeply connected, the courses surrounding them don’t always integrate them, an issue that the Hack Library School in particular has taken up here and here. Once I’ve made the transition from one program to the other, I hope I can contribute some more thoughts on the subject.
For now, good luck with finals, everyone, and congrats to those of you who are graduating.
